A group of 14 islands and islets in the south of Vung Tau in the South China Sea, Con Doa an ideal place to unwind. The island is also the place where freedom fighters were held and tortured. Visit the Revolutionary Museum that contains displays of the Vietnamese resistance to the French and the treatment meted out to political prisoners held on the island. Explore the islands and visit Con Son, the largest island in the archipelago. Visit the Con Son Prison , which the French had built to punish opponents to French colonialism. Also take a trip to the Phu Hai jail (which means Prison Number One) that was constructed by the French in 1862. See American ‘tiger cages’ and French ‘tiger cages’, both with bare ceilings and large iron grillwork. At the Hang Duong Cemetery, you’ll come across thousands of graves of prisoners who died in the Con Dao prisons and see the graves of famous Vietnamese heroes like Vo Thi Sau, Nguyen An Ninh and Le Hong Phong. The next day, laze around on the beach or take a stroll around the island before you return to Saigon.
